The holidays are supposed to be a time filled with joy, laughter, friends, family and fun, but they can also bring us stress and even the winter blues. Don’t let the cold weather and lack of sunshine keep you in a slump, let me shine a little light on how you can enjoy the holiday season feeling as jolly as the Big Man himself!
1: Spend it With Your BFF’s
Plan a trip with your best gal pals. Whether you want to hit the slops or have a girls night with some wine and good laughs, plan an excursion or a fun night in. Whether your plans involve hopping on a plane or driving an hour or two away, plan it well in advance and don’t find excuses not to go!
Buy your tickets, reserve the hotel and start planning the activities everyone wants to do. Planning in advance eliminates stress and allows you to enjoy your mini vacay. Although sometimes not having a schedule or anything planned can make it exciting! Whatever you decide to do, make sure you’re going somewhere and doing things that will make you relax.
2: Start Your Day With a Positive Attitude
How you wake up is completely your choice. There is no such thing as waking up on the wrong side of the bed. You are in control of your attitude. Wake up with good intentions and plans to tackle the day head on and accomplish all your goals. It’s okay to struggle and feel negative emotions, but you don’t have to let those feelings dictate your entire day. Tell yourself that you’ll be in a good mood and find ways to stay positive. Find little things to keep yourself motivated and in a good mood. It can be something as simple as a warm bath, getting a massage or getting your hair and nails done. Whatever it is, figure something out and find ways to get rid of the negative energy and stay positive every day.
3: Just Breathe
Sometimes life can feel a bit overwhelming. You might be slammed at work, behind on bills or something else might be causing you stress, but no matter what’s disrupting the peace, just breathe! When we’re anxious or stressed our breathing pattern changes. Your breathing should be even because balanced breathing brings balance to the body and our brain. So if you notice that your breathing is not even, just take a few moments to slow down, create some clarity and breathe to bring yourself back into the moment.
4: Dance It Out!
Put on some tunes, crank the music up and let the rhythm take over your body! All you really need is a few minutes of dancing and singing like nobody’s watching to get your blood flowing and to get your soul (and body) into the groove.
5: Dress Comfortably
Sometimes when I get anxious or stressed and my life feels chaotic, wearing clothes that are uncomfortable make me feel constricted and it makes it hard for me to breathe and relax. Wear something comfortable that makes you feel good! You don’t need to head to work in a form fitting skirt or a stiff blazer, throw on some comfy leggings and a cute dress or an oversized sweater and some adorable booties and you’re good to go! You can still be comfortable without sacrificing style.
6: Give Yourself a Break
Even if you’ve done everything in this blog post and you still find yourself stressed out and glum, just remember that it’s OKAY! We’re only human and it’s okay to have feelings and feel the way we feel. Sometimes you just need to give yourself a break and let the feeling pass. Sometimes it’s in our best interest to not force it and we just need a day to lounge around, skip work and lie in bed watching Netflix or Hulu. Be kind to yourself and don’t punish yourself for being down!
No matter how you’re feeling, remember the holidays are supposed to be about love, happiness and laughter! Yes they can be stressful and insanely busy, but remind yourself that you’ve got a lot of amazing and wonderful people in your life that you get to spend time with! We should all appreciate our loved ones and focus on creating beautiful memories with one another and just enjoying each other’s company, even if your Aunt Carol makes you wanna down 7 gin and tonics!
