I’ve written in the past about my skincare routine, but it’s constantly changing as I figure out what works best for my skin. In the winter my skin gets pretty dry and irritated. I blame the freezing cold Michigan temperatures and brutal winds.
I take extra care of my skin during this time, and my night time routine is pretty extensive but it works! I’ve struggled with acne and sensitive skin issues for a long time and it’s taken years of new products and trial and error to find the perfect routine, but I’ve finally nailed it down!
The first thing I do every night is wash my face. If I’m wearing makeup, I take it off with micellar water because it does a really great job at removing all the makeup and dirt on my skin. I’ve used Garnier in the past and it’s a great brand if you’re not sure what to get. I currently use micellar water from the brand Simple. It works wonders and it costs around $8, so it’s very inexpensive.
Once my makeup is removed, or if I’m not wearing any makeup I cleanse my face with a sulfur soap bar. It’s really good for treating and preventing acne and it works similarly to salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide. For my acne prone skin it really does a great job at treating any breakouts I have and helps prevents other ones from forming.
After cleansing my face I always use a toner. My absolute favorite toner is the Rose Petal and Witch Hazel Toner by Thayers. I used to use a cotton ball to apply the toner, but lately I’ve been pouring a little bit into the palm of my hands and massing it into my face.
After I apply toner to my face, I use my Jade Roller to massage my face. It helps with lymphatic drainage, helps improve skin elasticity and has tons of other benefits! It’s a truly game changing beauty product! There are some jade rollers out there that are outrageously expensive, but you can find inexpensive ones on Amazon or like this one at Ulta.
The skin around my eyes is really fragile so I like to take extra care of it. I use a Clinique eye roller that helps de-puff my eyes and prevents under eye bags.
After using my eye serum, I use a 24K Gold serum for my entire face. I put a drop or two into the palm of my hand, rub my hands together and then massage it all over my face. Here’s a Serum similar to what I use. It has gold flakes in it and it’s only $9.99. Other gold serums can get quite expensive.
My all-time favorite moisturizer is my Le Petit Olivier moisturizer I bought in France. It’s made with olive oil and it’s the best moisturizer I’ve ever used. I made sure to stock up on 5 extra bottles since it’s not available in the US. The closest thing to the one I use would be this moisturizer from Caudalie. Caudalie is another French brand and has incredible skincare products.
I use my oil AFTER I use my serums and my moisturizer. Sometimes people recommend using oil before applying any other skincare products, but I like to use oil after because it’s heavier and using it after my serum and moisturizer makes it easier for those products to absorb into my skin better. My favorite one is a rose hip oil from Measurable Difference. It’s relatively inexpensive and I love it!
Up until this point, my morning routine looks the exact same, except at this point I use a rose facial mist. At night it’s a little different because I like to use my jelly sleeping mask from Belif. It’s insanely hydrating, smells really good, has hyaluronic acid and doesn’t clog my pores. You can get it from Sephora!
It might seem counter productive to use eye cream last, but I personally like to put it on last because I like to give my eyes an extra layer of hydration. As I massage all the other products onto my skin, I also massage them around my eyes. The biggest reason I use my eye cream last is because if you put it on first, you have to avoid the eye area otherwise the product can blend into the rest of the products and spread over your face. I use the True Cream by Belif only on my eyes because it tends to make my jawline break out, so I want to make sure it’s only going on my eyes. It’s also available at Sephora!
I know, my night time skincare routine might seem excessive and it’s a little time consuming, but taking care of my skin is important to me! Your skin is your body’s biggest organ, so you have to take care of it! I believe that being proactive about my skin is much better than being reactive. It’s easy to prevent skin problems than it is to treat them, and as I get older my skin doesn’t bounce back as easily. That’s why I’ve developed this routine! I’m about to be in my late 20’s so right now is a crucial time to protecting my skin and taking care of it!
