Everyone starts January off feeling inspired and motivated, but most of us tend to start slipping up and fall short of our resolutions come mid-Jan. It can be easy to let the cold weather and dark days harsh your mellow (it’s currently 7F at my house right now…) but you don’t have to let it.
I know we’re only in the second week of January, but I have been in such a great mood and I’m seriously kicking ass, so I figured I would share my positive vibes and pass on the inspiration.
Celebrate the Little Things
The New Year is always about resolutions, pacts and new goals, but don’t burden yourself by piling too much on your plate. It’s okay to fall a little short sometimes, so don’t be hard on yourself.
Think about the things you’ve already accomplished, no matter how small. Celebrate those little victories! January is the month of trial and error, IMHO, because it’s going to take some time to nail down a routine. You can’t just completely change up your entire routine and expect your body and your mind to follow blindly.
Give yourself some time to get into the groove, stay positive and celebrate those little accomplishments.
Make a Plan
This year I’m all about planning in advance. I like to write everything down and make detailed lists of what I want to get done and when. I like to narrow things down and take it one step at a time. Instead of focusing on monthly goals, I like to take it week by week.
I make a list of general things I want to accomplish during the week, and then the night before I detail my day. Sunday night I’ll look at my weekly list and say: Okay, Monday I need to write ___ blog post. Then I need to create pin images for Pinterest, schedule them out, pin to my boards, promote my blog post, etc.
When I can narrow things down and tackle my goals one step at a time, I stick to it. It can be too stressful to try to look at an entire month and try to create detailed goals for weeks out, so I start small. If you struggle with this, maybe you need a planner or a bullet journey. I love this planner!
Practice Self Care
I’m a self-care freak. I’m all about self love because I think it’s really important. I know it can be hard to love yourself after the holidays and you want to crush your goals, but give yourself a break. You won’t accomplish much if you’re overworked, tired and stressed out. Be nice to yourself because you deserve some self-love.
Move Your Booty
Stop making excuses. Whether you’re struggling to wake up on time or you’re making excuses for why you can’t work out, just stop. Get up and just do it.
If you have a hard time waking up in the morning, try putting your alarm clock across the room so you’re forced to actually get out of bed. If you’re struggling to stick to a work out routine, keep yourself moving throughout the day. Take a break for 5-10 minutes every hour to move around. Step outside for some fresh air, get up and grab a glass of water.
Tell yourself that you’re only going to work out for 5 minutes. Once you actually start your workout, it’s easy to push well past those 5 minutes. Just keep doing these things until it no longer becomes a task and it just becomes a habit.
All in all it’s important that you’re having fun and enjoying your life. If your routine, your goals or your job is causing you a lot of stress and affecting your life in a negative way, you might need to take a step back and assess your situation. If you’re unhappy, then what’s the point?
Why bother putting so much energy into something that isn’t going to benefit you and doesn’t make you happy at the end of the day?
Life is what you make it! January has a lot of potential and can set the tone for your entire year, so make sure you’re staying positive, setting the right goals, being productive, celebrating the little things and having fun!
