It’s only the beginning of February and I’m already over this winter. The past few weeks have been brutal. I live in one of the most beautiful places in the world, but unfortunately it gets very cold.
The other night I was making a mug of tea before bed and the temperature was -15°F. That’s -26°C. It’s been below zero for weeks. Those of you who live in warmer climates, I envy you! I’m really struggling to get through the winter, so I’ve come up with some tips on how to survive the remainder of these cold, dark, sunless, snowy winter days.
Winter sucks. It’s cold, dark and dreary so making myself feel cozy every day is a must. I like wearing comfortable clothes both at home and at work. When I’m at work I wear cozy layers that are stylish, but work appropriate. When I’m at home I’m bundled up in cozy socks, fuzzy pajama pants, a warm sweater and my robe.
Just because it’s cold outside doesn’t mean I have to sacrifice comfort inside!
Stay Active and Healthy
People tend to be less active during the winter months, so I make it a point to be more active and eat extra healthy. It’s easy for me to stay healthy during the summer, but during the winter it’s a little harder for me.
The cold weather and dark days make me want to curl up in bed all day and never leave. It’s far too cold to go outside and do anything fun, so I find myself stuck in doors for pretty much the entire winter. It can be pretty difficult to find the energy to stay active and move around when you’re stuck inside.
That’s why I take extra care to eat healthy and work out daily so I can get the energy to push through.
Stick to a Schedule
During the summer I cut myself some slack with my schedule. I’m a lot more spontaneous because let’s face it, there is so much to during the summer that I’m never able to stick to my schedule anyway. But during the winter, sticking to my schedule and following a routine is what keeps me sane.
When I have something to look forward to and get done every day, it makes it so much easier for me to stay positive and not let the depressing winter get me down.
Indulge in Self Care
I’m a freak about self care, but I become obsessive about it during the winter months. I think that it’s always important to practice self care, but it’s especially important during the winter. When the days are cold and dark, it can be all too easy to slip into a depression.
The extreme cold and lack of sunshine in my life really put a damper on my spirits, but when I’m taking care of my physical and mental health I prevent the winter from pulling me down. Even if it’s something as simple as doing a DIY face mask and drinking a mug of my favorite tea, it relaxes me and helps me stay positive and focused.
If you’re experiencing a harsh winter like I am, keep pushing through! Spring is just around the corner!
